How to choose the correct rug for your space

Size

Lets begin with the size. The correct size is crucial to ensuring your rug will ground the room and tie all of your elements together.

Undersize and it will make the room feel cluttered and smaller. Bigger is usually better when it comes to rugs ( a bit like artwork). But make sure you don’t go so big that the rug is too close to the perimeter of the room or ending in an awkward spot like the middle of a thoroughfare.

Functionality

How is the space going to be used?

In a living room, you want something soft to sit on, like wool. But ensuring the finish of the rug will function in a high use area. Flatweave can be a good option here.

Bedroom rugs can be a more luxurious finish. It’s a low traffic area, which is less likely to incur spills and wear.

Have pets? Maybe you could consider a synthetic fibre for durability.

Before you buy

I always suggest taping out the size on the floor before you buy.

Take a rug sample home and see how the colour and fabric works in your space.

If you can buy a rug which is a “standard” size, you will save a lot of money.
