Should you choose wool flooring, over its synthetic counterparts?

The run down on wool

For years we have been taken down a path with a push for synthetic materials, the idea of everything needing to be “indestructible” and providing so called longevity.

While synthetic materials absolutely have their place in some circumstances, I feel like we’ve become a little lost along the way, on the durability and longevity of natural materials, embracing the beauty of patina and how a product needs to perform in a multitude of ways.

Here are some facts on wool and some of the reasons I like to specify wool carpets, rugs and materials where suitable.

Sustainability

Yes, 100% wool carpets and rugs can better for the environment. For many reasons.

Wool fibers are natural, biodegradable and renewable.

Synthetic materials contain plastic. Which is not only not environmentally friendly, but also means they’re not ideal for your health.

Fire resistant

Wool is fire resistant, naturally. Making it hard to ignite, slow to burn and self-extinguishing.

Acoustic and thermal benefits

Your wool carpets and rugs will keep your home cooler in the summer months and warmer in the winter months with its thermal qualities.

While its acoustic benefits will lend itself to a quieter, Cosier home year round.

Durable and stain resistant

Don’t believe all the hype of the synthetic movement we have all been sold, yet thankfully moving away from as we turn back towards natural materials.

Wool is durable, stain resistant and when done correctly, is easy to clean.

Resistant to odour and moisture

The natural properties of wool help it to resist odours as well as limit the absorption of moisture. Unlike many synthetic fibers.
