How to use mirrors throughout your home.

Mirror, mirror on the wall……

Cleverly placed mirrors, used throughout your home can serve a greater purpose than just doing your hair and makeup in the mornings.

Positioned strategically, they can be used to visually open up a space and make it feel grander than it is. Its all about tricking the eye.

Here are my top tips for using mirrors in the home ……

House a little on the small side?

Along with carefully curated furniture and paint selection, mirrors can be used to create a great illusion of space within your home. Adding height, depth, and even length to a room. A long horizontal mirror can give a sense of length to your space, while an oversized floor mirror can trick the eye in to thinking the room has more height to it than it actually does. I personally LOVE a good oversized arched or round mirror to give a sense of depth to a room, all while also adding a softness with its delicious curves.

Your home lacks windows and natural light?

Mirrors are the perfect solution. Strategically placed across from a window, not only do you bounce around all of that gorgeous natural light, you have instantly added a whole new window to your home. This will not only open up your space but it’s a great way to bring the outdoors in. Along with a careful selection of indoor plants……. Because there is no such thing as too much greenery, right?

One of our beautiful projects where we used this mirror to give an illusion of space and increase natural light.

Go big!

I’m a big believer in going BIG when it comes to mirrors (and also artwork). There is nothing like an oversized piece to make a real statement!  When mirrors are too small, they lose their effect of creating that spaciousness. Instead of creating an illusion it can end up just being something else hanging on the wall.

As a feature.

You can find some gorgeous mirrors with sculptural shapes and textures to bring softness to a room. Almost as a piece of art work itself. You can hang a selection of smaller sculptural mirrors in a cluster. Even a rattan arched mirror balanced strategically on a shelf to add some texture, height and depth , while keeping the styling minimal.

This can also work well with a small vase with greenery placed just in front of it, slightly off to the side.

However you decide to use mirrors throughout your home, be brave with it. And for those whom are interested in Feng Shui, it’s definitely worth a read up on how mirrors can be used throughout your home to invite the five elements in and to expand your space energetically.
